Training at Kenpo Richmond is designed to improve your personal fitness as you learn martial arts and self-defense.
Unlike other schools with the same boring routine, each class at Kenpo Richmond offers different training activities that keep classes interesting and fresh, while continuing to develop and refine your self-defense skills.
You can be assured our class structure will allow you to get the most from each training session. You will experience a pace of training intensity that will work your entire body and your mental state. Though each class is varied, we do offer you an overview of our group activities with the following:
Warm-Ups & Stretching
All classes begin with varying warm-ups and stretching.
Falling
Since Kenpo Jujitsu teaches self defense at the ranges of Kicking, Striking, Trapping and Grappling, it is important for students to learn how to fall properly and safely. You start learning this early in your training.
Basics & Drills
Basics and Drills are worked during every class. These are designed to help with developing proper form and natural movement. The activities vary and may include any one or combination of the following: footwork and movement, positioning, trapping, intercepting, striking, kicking, and falls to name several. The format may include working up and down the mat, with partners, in small groups, or any number of routines.
Forms & Sets
These are kata (sequential movements), to reinforce proper movement and body mechanics. Though we do work on different forms and sets, we prefer to work these patterns with a partner.
Techniques
Working techniques in contact with a partner is the main segment of each class. This level of practice develops muscle memory and synchronization of movements while being engaged physically. It also teaches students how to make adjustments in their application of self defense movements. Only through repeated proper practice and training, can a student develop the proficiency to instinctively respond and adjust to an attack.
Outdoor Training
Classes are periodically held outdoors at various locations to help students learn how to adapt to different environments and terrain.
